Summary of Adams, Backus & Chapian

In many ways, Adams, Backus & Chapian’s books interconnect. In “How to Help People Change” by Jay Adams (1986), Adams uses scripture to show how change comes from within us through a spiritual alteration of self. Adams (1986) indicates that any outward changes must be the result of inward spiritual changes. Adams (1986) looks at four steps in the process of edification (p. 13). These steps include teaching, conviction, correction and disciplined training in righteousness. The disciple Paul indicates that these steps are the only steps, that are set forth in the Scriptures, which affect change that is pleasing to God (p.14). In 2 Timothy 3:16-17 it says “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

In adhering to the steps that the disciple Paul sets out, Adams (1986) indicates that the steps have to be completed in the order they are given in the Bible in order to be effective. As Adams (1986) breaks down the four steps he looks at teaching as being the first level in helping people. This allows for truth to be the basis for people to recognize their short comings, admit their wrong doing and embrace that which is right. The importance, that Adams (1986) highlights is that teaching is “transcultural” (p. 61). It doesn’t matter where you live or your culture, because the problems people face are universal. The way understanding works is that as people begin to understand God’s word, they are able to understand just how God would have each of us to live our lives (p. 63). Adams (1986) states that “Training consists of learning the biblical alternatives to the acts, attitudes, and lifestyles that need to be replaced.
