Crime Data Comparison Paper

After looking over the FBI Crime Report, I decided to use the State where I used to live and the State where my parents live. While doing my research I found that the numbers are not accurate as they need to be due to the fact not all of the acts of crime are reported because people are afraid to report because they feel they will be looked over or can possibly be targeted again for the same crime.

The occurrence I have chosen is property crimes. Property crimes consist of items being stolen from a person or place. For instance money, jewelry, clothing, motor vehicles, officer equipment, TV’s, radios, fire arms, household goods, consumable goods and live stock. As we can see property crimes is a wide area of crimes. The two areas I have chosen are Ann Arbor Michigan and Naples/Marco Island Florida. The years I will be comparing are 2009 and 2010.

Ann Arbor, Michigan;

In 2009 the population including Washtenaw County was 348,606 and in the City of Ann Arbor the population was 114,367. The property crimes on record in 2009 were 2950. In 2010 the population including Washtenaw County was 349,839 and for the City of Ann Arbor 111, 745. The property crimes for that year were 2937. As we can see the population went up and the property crimes went down. That is ironic considering the way the economy was in 2010, I would figure that the property crime rate would have gone up.

Naples/Marco Island, Florida;

In 2009 the population including Collier County was 320,093. In the City of Naples the population was 21,587 and in Marco Island were 15,713. The property crime rate in 2009 for Naples was 78 and for Marco Island were 18. In 2010 the population including Collier County was 325,568 and in the city of Naples was 630 and Marco Island was 161. As we can see in Florida the population and crime rates went up from 2009 and 2010.
