1. Genital mutilation is mostly because of tradition, common in Nigeria, Togo, Somalia, and Egypt. I have also read in the internet that it is done in a school called Marallo at night. They use codes so that ordinary people won’t know what they were doing. And because it’s not legal to circumcise the females, they must keep it as a secret. Since the removal of the female genital is done by a midwife, a tribal practitioner, I must agree that it is not a medical procedure. They could be lucky if a doctor have done it for them. But even so, it’s not a doctor recommended thing to do, and Meserak Ramsey proved it when she said that there might a danger of infection, infertility and even death. And so I must say that this female genital mutilation is not a medical procedure, its more on the social control. That those whoever experienced this tradition are bitter enough to make them force the future generations to do it. And even make a secret ceremony, even if it is illegal, just for the younger generations feel the pain they felt before. And it is not really a good tradition because future complications may occur.
2. Other examples of physical mutilation I know is the “Lotus feet” in China, or not really in all parts of China but yes there is that kind of tradition. Wherein the young female wears a steal shoe, or something that is hard so that their feet won’t grow into normal sizes and older ones are allowed to wear cloth like material as their shoe because their lotus feet are already intact and formed. That is why on movies, they walk like gliding their feet forward, not the ordinary walking. Since I don’t know anymore about other female physical mutilation, I searched the internet and I found out that others experience neck lengthening, ears or nostrils pierced, teeth are knocked out, cheeks are cut and lips are made to protrude.
