The Current Application and Future Prospect of Nanotechnology in IT
Introduction
Nanotechnology is the technology of manufacturing and manipulating molecular at the scale of 0.1 to 100 nanometers. Nanosize super particles display powerful electrical, chemical, and mechanical properties. This technology is considered as a “general purpose technology” (Holley, 2009, p. 11). The researchers have been studying nanotechnology from physical, chemical, and biological areas (Bachmann, 2002). The research and development of this technology are merging from multiple disciplines. It has become a top priority of the EU's recently approved Sixth Research and Development Framework (Wolff, 2003). Billions of dollars have been invested in R & D of nanotechnology (Wolff, 2003). Aeppli, Warburton, & Renner (2006) believe that nanotechnology could change IT design paradigms by going beyond classical logic gates to use quantum mechanics, thus changing the fundamental hardware design scheme. That application in IT could shrink computers and make them small enough to put almost anywhere (Geer, 2006). The potential relevance and impact on IT fields cannot be underestimated, and it will affect the profession and career of every IT worker.
Selection Criteria
Although the most areas of nanotechnology are still at its research stage, it has already accumulated abundant supply of research journals and articles. From a researcher’s point of view, this is feast waiting for being devoured. There are plenty of journals on current nanotechnology application and its future prospect available from Strayer electronic library. Evidence that the topic on nanotechnology will generate a variety relevant source for analysis and synthesis is overwhelming. With IT my academic background, I could learn and explore nanotechnology...
