Topic Sentence and Informal Outline Worksheet

Using the Center for Writing Excellence and MyFoundationsLab resources, provide the topic sentence and informal outline for your Personal Ethics Statement.

• Topic sentence: I believe that SOPA and PIPA are wrong because I believe that no one should have the right to censor the internet.

• Informal outline:

I. Introduction

II. Sites that would be effected

a. Sites like DeviantART or YouTube would be effected

i. DeviantART is mostly made up of fan art of other people’s characters and could be reduced in content

ii. YouTube would no longer be a place to listen to free music because of the copyright laws.

b. Sites that run and get their money from ads would be effected

i. It could be seen as online piracy

ii. The sites would no longer get the funds to run and have to be shut down.

III. Piracy sites would be shut down

a. Pirate Bay and other torrent sites would have to be shut down or blocked

i. Sites that take US materials and put them on the internet would be charged

ii. Many people would be charged with illegally downloading copyrighted material

b. Picture websites like Photobucket and Google Images would be restricted

i. Images would no longer be free

ii. Limit what we can use for school

IV. Allow the FBI to seek out foreign web sites that steal music, films, software, and other property created by US firms

a. Examples that teachers put up on the internet would no longer be available for students

i. Examples beyond what the instructors give students would no longer be available to help students

ii. Many teacher resources would no longer be available

b. Legislation would disrupt the way the internet is designed to work

i. Too much of a burden on internet search providers and search engines

ii. Many internet crashes daily

iii. Things you say on social networking sites may be copyrighted...
