Kudler Fine Foods operates at three locations currently linked through an 56k Internet connection. Smith Consulting must consider the steps necessary for quality control, testing the new application, implementation of the application and securing the connection to the data. When these steps are complete the application will be installed at Kudler stores, on the remote server and the three locations will be connected to the remote database.

Quality Assurance

Kudler Fine Foods Frequent Shopper Program quality assurance includes local testing of POS (Point of Sale) user interfaces and web interfaces for website integration. The testing is conducted locally so the tests do not interfere with normal operations of POS systems stability, website stability, and website security during this ongoing process.

Quality assurance is not a process completed at the end of development, it is a process conducted at each testable step in development. Because this is an ongoing process there are security and stability concerns during the testing of incomplete application processes. Because of these security concerns the function testing is conducted on local equipment at Smith Consulting.

Smith Consulting runs Apple computers, so testing is conducted in virtual machines, these virtual machines can be completely restored to a saved state if any of the applications damaged the operating system during testing phases. This Ensure the testing is as accurate as possible without the need to reinstall the operating system each time a problem occurs.

Because the POS system is running on a Windows 9x operating system (Apollo Group, 2009) and the web interface is in php and HTML virtual machines are set up to test the functions without the need of specialized hardware. During these stages of testing Smith Consulting will use keyboard input in place of card swipers and barcode scanners, those are tested later using the production machines.
