The language they use is very full of swearwords, the words “Fuck” and “Bitch” are used repetitively. It’s a very rude way of speaking, and in my opinion, not very lady like. They swear like old, drunk sailors!

2. How does Sharon handle her new situation? Where does she get information about what is happening to her through her pregnancy?

The first thing she does, is buying a book about the first fourteen weeks of pregnancy. She reads the book every night, and waits for the changes she reads about. She read about what she should eat, and realizes that most of the things in her diet are wrong. She gets a bit scared when she reads about all the things that can go wrong.

3. What does Jimmy Sr. imply when he says “I can’t afford to do tha’ every nigh’”?

When Sharon’s little sister, Tracy, keeps asking whether Sharon is pregnant or not, Jimmi Sr. eventually pays the child off, with one pound so she can get some sweets. Jimmi Sr. says “I can’t afford to do tha’ every nigh’”. This, he said because Sharon has to tell her siblings sooner or later that she is having a baby. Sooner rather than later, because he can’t afford giving out money to make the children stop asking.

Questions for Chapter 2

1. In this chapter you get the feel for the atmosphere in this family. Describe it with special emphasis on the relationship between Jimmi Sr. and Veronica.

The chapter starts with Jimmi waking up on the couch. He seems to have quite a hangover, so he goes to the kitchen to get some painkillers. His wife, Veronica, is in the kitchen, sowing a skirt for Linda. Jimmi immediately starts swearing and yelling to her about there not being any more painkillers left. Which he seems to do quite a lot… Veronica is a very quiet person, who dislikes people swearing and yelling. The relationship between the two of them is quite cold, and they do not seem to enjoy each other’s company. It also seems that all the children, and all the arguing about the children, are wearing them out.
