1. What are the inputs, processing, and outputs of UPS’s package tracking system?

The inputs include the package information, which is about the weight, location and mail speed the customer chooses. It also includes the sender’s signature when the package is pickup and the receiver’s signature when the package is delivered.

Processing converts the raw inputs into a meaningful form. The information can be transmitted to the computer center and sent to the distribution center. The data can be collected and organized to form the tracking information.

Outputs include the tracking information that the customer can know what the time schedule is, where the package is, and who send the package and who receive it. What’s more, the UPS will know whether the route is the nearest and they can save the time and fuel. So, they can manage it better.

2. What technologies are used by UPS? How are these technologies related to UPS’s business model and business objectives?

First, UPS uses the scannable bar-coded label which contains the detailed information, and customer can download the label using special software provided by UPS.

Second, UPS uses the technology known as handheld computers (DIADs).

Thirdly, UPS has the central computer which may contain lots of wired and wireless networks.

Fourthly, UPS also uses storage technology for the package delivery data.

Lastly, UPS has the Web-based Post-sales Order Management System to manage the global service.

UPS’s strategy is to provide the “best service and lowest rates.” These technologies used can be improve the efficiency and reduce the cost which enabled UPS to be the leader in small-package delivery. The technologies help the UPS’s business model and business objectives come true.
