Motivation

Motivation is the processes that account for an individual’s intensity, direction, and persistence of effort toward attaining a goal (Robbins’s &Judge, 2011, p. 1). The three key elements in definition are intensity, direction, and persistence. Intensity describes how hard a person tries. This is the element most of people focus on when they talk about motivation. However, high intensity is unlikely to lead to favorable job-performance outcomes unless the effort is channeled in a direction that benefits the organization. Therefore, consider the quality of effort as well as its intensity. Effort directed toward, and consistent with, the organization’s goals is the kind of effort that everyone should be seeking. Finally, motivation has a persistence dimension. This measures how long a person can maintain effort. Motivated individuals stay with a task long enough to achieve their goal.

Everyone wants to be successful. But to be successful, there is an important thing people must have and that is motivation. Motivation helps people get started, keeps moving, makes them do more than necessary, and makes the journey fun. In down economy, it's more important than ever to have a motivated workforce. That's because a motivated employee is a productive employee. And a productive employee is a more profitable employee. When people aren't motivated, they become less productive, less creative, less of an asset to your company. Motivation is individual and diverse.
