Personal Ethics Development

The terms “Ethics” have various meaning for different individuals depending on different factors such as environment, religion, politics, childhood, experiences and so on and so forth. It’s considered to be a moral philosophy that concerns good and evil, wrong or right, vice or virtue. Ethics are never set, not to me anyway. A personal ethical system has a beginning, and as we grow, so does our ethical system evolving with us. In the following paragraphs, we will get a better view of where my ethics originated from, how they have evolved, and experiences that adjusted my beliefs along the way.

Parents

Ethics for me began long before I could talk. It begins with parents and our environment at the time. For example, children who witnesses violence and abuse, physically and verbally at a young age often times follow the same pattern because that ethical settings convinces them that that is normal behavior; until that is, they grow older and learn otherwise. Once right from wrong is acknowledged, then ethics becomes a choice. For me, it all began with my parents. My mother on one had constantly emphasizes what’s right, what’s fair and humane. My father on the other hand, always resorted to violence and verbal abuse. Within me, I was always drawn to my mother’s ways that were calming, submissive and dedicated to the Lord despite anything she went through. As I grew older, I continued to battle with the “tempered” side of me and knowing it is wrong, I choose to fight it believing that the wrong or “easy way out” is always a temporary fix. The hardest thing to do is to remain on the side of the righteous; however, I believe it is worth all of its long term benefits.
