Analyzing Diversity

Issues in Communication January 12, 2012 University of Phoenix Diversity is a word is often used to explain and or portray differences in cultural backgrounds; diversity also pertains to many other things. According to the EBook, “In recent years, the term diversity has grown in use. The term regularly appears in the popular media, professional magazines, trade books, and scholarly literature. Nevertheless, there is no single, agreed upon definition of diversity.” This means, diversity can be defined in many ways and not just in the cultural definition. The root of the word diversity is difference; diversity is different aspects of a certain collection or gathering, mostly commonly used when describing a group of people. Diversity has been around because before researchers were calling the interchanging of various characteristics, diversity. There is diversity in the workplace, schools, religious establishments, language differences, and conflict of culture. Instances such as the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack of the Twin Towers made the people of American very apprehensive about the subject of diversity. According to the EBook (2010), “People in the United States suddenly became much more aware of their own vulnerability and cultural isolation, as well as the growing importance of world economies, world geography, communications networks, migration, cultural values and traditions, and religious diversity.” The people of America feared what the perceived to be out of the norm because a very small group of Muslims attacked the country and some people still feel a certain prejudice against Muslim people. Trying to thrive successfully in a diverse community may be a hard task, especially when the person is a minority or an immigrant in the diverse community.
