Strength |

* Opera is one of the greatest and the fastest growing segments in the performing art industry. (The audiences has increased by at least 16 million in the past 30 years) * BLO has a history of producing outstanding operatic talents, including Deborah Voigt, Lorraine Hunt Lieberson and Paul Groves, many of whom have achieved successful careers and won prestigious national awards * BLO is also very enthusiastic in training young talents by providing a Varity of specialist training and performing opportunity for young artists. At the same time BLO focuses on promoting opera appreciation by operating educational and community program with the goal of making opera available and accessible greater Boston areas. |

Weakness |

* Opera is a very unique theatrical art form that combines drama, visual arts and music into a powerful and deeply emotional performance. A fully-staged opera production is multi-media which makes opera the most expensive art form to produce. * The industry relies heavily on public and private financial support. Individual support remained the largest single source of income in the performing art sector, accounting for more than 50%. Like many opera companies, we are suffering from insufficient funds and sponsorships due to decrease corporation donations. This prevents us from increasing performing output, improving production values and supporting the creation of new work. * BLO has a competitive disadvantage as a small opera company. Large opera companies have advantage in marketing, attracting star performers and most importantly, in fund-raising. Therefore BLO must compete effectively by specializing in new, unique and innovative works * Audiences’ development is a major issue facing many opera companies.
