Looking back over my life, it’s been fifteen years since I graduated high school. Time sure does fly. Immediately after high school my plans were to complete college and become a social worker. Little did I know my life took a different turn. All in all, I have no regrets. This is how my story unfolds.
Shortly after high school I moved into the house with my high school sweetheart and his family. I can just hear my mom preaching now as I relive my past through writing this paper. “Keisha, why would you want to mess your life up like that”, said my mom (Burks, 2011). The things that my mom was trying to tell me then was Greek and I didn’t know Greek. I thought I was grown and didn’t need any guidance from my mom, that I was old enough to make my own decisions (Gipson, 2011). A couple of years later my high school sweetheart and I bought a home. I remember being so excited, thinking that my mom would be very excited for us and she was. Later, we married, “true bliss”, as they say. Who would have ever dreamed in a million years that I was facing a divorce, not I? The thoughts that were racing through my mind were all the ones of my preaching to me. I was very disappointed; the biggest mountain was me breaking the news to my mom, not necessarily the divorce. After breaking the news to my mom, I thought that I would hear, “I tried to tell you to go ahead and finished college but no, this was what you wanted”. My mom didn’t say that, she just smoothed everything over just like icing on a cake. She assured me that everything was okay and this wasn’t the end of the world for me. Thank God for her!
After divorcing so suddenly, I thought that this was the end of the world and my life was ruined. Eventually, I started turning things around trying to re-establish myself. At this point, I felt like I had wasted years of my life. I hadn’t completed anything....
