Culture

When one thinks of culture one can reference images in the old National Geographic magazine depicting family life somewhere in the Rain Forest and eating from banana leaves. Culture is seen in microelements of society when it is refers to the complexities of larger groups. This paper will define culture by breaking down the individual elements into categories. This paper will follow each category of culture as it pertains to the Chinese culture.

For this paper several definitions and examples describe what culture is, but for this purposes culture is defined from the chapter two of the electronic text as learned norms based on the values, attitudes, and beliefs of a group (Daniels, Radebaugh, & Sullivan, 2007, para. 2). This paper will focus on the cultural views held impart by the nation of China, or its national culture. When analyzing the nation one has to start with the family unit. Culture organizes people into smaller units, which start at the family level.

The Family Makeup

The family unit is the most important part of shaping a country. National attitudes, religious, political views, and national pride begin in the family unit. The nuclear family includes a husband, wife, and children. This is a family unit consist of parents living in the home to influence the beliefs and values of the children. The extended family consists of one or more nuclear family members also including grandparents, uncles, aunts, etc. Because of overpopulation, China has a one child policy, limiting couples to one child. Because China restricts the nuclear family, it is common to see nuclear and extended families sharing the same domicile. This factor creates a greater cohesion within the family and extends into the workforce.
