Today, just about everywhere, you look; you will find someone with a tattoo. In April 2000, National Geographic News recorded that 15% of Americans were tattooed. That is approximately 40 million people. Now considering that number of people, you would think that tattoos would be largely accepted in the workplace but, in fact, many experienced some sort of discrimination on the job or in finding a job; why should those with tattoos be treated any different from those without. Tattoos should be allowed in the workplace and not shunned.

Throughout time tattoos have been used as gang signs, marks of slavery, and a show of dominance among criminals, however, many have been use to communicate accomplishment, leadership or rank. Some tattoos are used to show respect and serve as reminders for deceased or lost loved ones. There are also religious reasons for tattoos, while others may use it for permanent makeup.

You want to be judged based on your past successes and accomplishments not just the way you look. However, some employers, no matter how good you interview or how right you are for the position, see a tattoo and immediately make a decision about your character. They see a tattoo and almost, instantaneously stereotype you, placing you in the same category as gang members, criminals, and bikers. Nevertheless, they would be sorely mistaken. Tattoos do not mean people are bad or that they are not good employee as those without them....
