In the movie Freedom Writers, a teacher by the name of takes a pay cut to become a teacher in a poverty bound area of California. She is married to an architect who makes a substantial amount of money. The class she is assigned is a mixture of many different cultures and races. The class consists of African Americans, Asians, Hispanics and Whites. Each race struggles to get along with the other simply because they have been raised to think that their race is superior to the others. Each student also has an issue with trying to make their family proud even if that means causing harm to others. Many arguments and fights break out during class, and Mrs. Struggles to keep them in check. Any of the other teachers at the school have already written the students off. They feel that the kids will always do what they want to do, so there is no reason to try to control them. Mrs. Feels much different about them. She know that anything is possible if you work hard at it. While at home she does not get much support from her husband who wishes she would stop teaching at the school and find a job that pays more money.

Mrs. Then decides to give each student a journal so they can write their thoughts out and vent. She asures them that no one else will be reading the jouranls and that they can say whatever they please. But they have to write something to get credit for their work. The students are very hesitant at first because they want their image to still be creditable, but they soon realize that this journal is a great way to express theirselves. As the students write in their journals, Ms. Realizes that many of the kids face similar problems in their homes and that they are all very much alike. She then decides to do an activity that shows the kids that they are much alike. This activity works for a short period, then the kids go right back to treating each other harshly.
