Demonstrative Communication

Communication is the act of imparting information, beliefs and views either written, verbally or visually. You can give the information by telling someone, by writing it on paper or electronically via email, text message, or with slides and other forms of visual presentation. According to the College of DuPage’s management department; verbal communication makes up 7% of your message, and the remainder is composed of 38% tone and 55% nonverbal cues (Lee, 2011).

Demonstrative communication is the portion of communication which includes nonverbal and unwritten communication. These include facial expressions, tone of voice, eye contact and body language.

Demonstrative communication strengthens and gives volume to verbal communication. In the business world; if you are attempting to conduct business with another person in person for the first time, then your initial visual impression will set the tone for the majority of the impression you give off. If you are well groomed, dressed professionally and conduct yourself in a like manner, then the person you are working with will probably view and treat you as a professional. On the other side of the coin; if you are unwashed, wearing ill-fitting or dirty clothes, and conduct yourself in an unprofessional manner, then the person(s) you are trying to do business with will more than likely not work with you. Another example of nonverbal communication would be in a school setting. As a teacher in a classroom setting; you want to make sure your class is paying attention. If your class (or student) is sitting up, paying attention and possibly taking notes, then you know they are getting the information you are trying to impart. This will most likely result in good test scores, better grades and passing the classes.
