INDIVIDUALITY IS DENIED TO A PERSON WHO IDENTIFIES WITH OR BELONGS TO A GROUP

An aggregate of qualities, in other words, one’s individuality, is what sets a person apart from another. In this aggregate, superficial characteristics like face, name and mannerisms are seldom considered. It is more dependent upon one’s morals, their family and their choice in music, friends, etc. The human need to belong to, presents us with a diverse range of groups to identify with but we are drawn towards people that are somewhat similar to us. However, claiming that our need to belong to snatches away our will to be different is rather absurd.

It is impossible to even assume that one cannot be different in a group. No matter how much persons try, they cannot completely implant the morals and thinking of other members in their groups. Groups have certain protocols to be followed, which, some may follow religiously and others may not. History has presented us with great examples, like reforms brought in Europe during the period of renaissance. When religion was being followed for hundreds of years without hassle, due to peoples’ individuality and their varying ideas, religions were transformed, ideals were modernized; reforms were brought about in the fields of art, music and architecture. And all this made possible because of an individualistic approach by ordinary people who were individual, within their groups and whom, we now recall as great artists, musicians, philosophers and leaders.

Race and nationality also play a part. One person married in another race is quite common these days in our world made small by globalisation. People today are entitled to their own religion, freedom of speech and freedom to follow what they believe. A woman of African descent, is black in appearance, is married to a man of white descent; and is now part of his family and follows the rules of and is limited by the morals of her husband’s family.
