Case Study Southwest University
Real Company History
The information provided in the text about Southwestern University was a little embellished. Rather than the enrollment of close to 20,000 students, the university’s real number is closer to 2,000 students. It is still a large college with about 700 acres of land in Georgetown, Texas. The college also is centered around student learning; with small class sizes and supportive faculty and staff. In those ways the college is sort of like Nevada State College. Southwestern is a private institution where only about 16% of the students that apply are accepted. The undergraduate work is focused in the area of liberal arts with the college branching off into some pre-professional and certification programs. With their 314 million dollar endowment the college has one of the highest endowments per student in the nation. This leaves a lot of money to focus on sports. The athletics program is a member of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC). The college is a NCAA division III school, which means that the college has not had much success with athletic programs. The college does have an extensive offering in intramural and recreational activities which include nationally competitive club programs in handball and men’s lacrosse, rock climbing, ultimate Frisbee, and equestrian sports. The NCAA division III recognized sports include; basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming, tennis, men’s baseball, women’s volleyball and women’s softball. The college does not even have a football team. For both formal and informal athletics activities the college has the Robertson Center, a 95,000 square-foot comprehensive recreational and athletic facility.
