Comparison of Parenting Styles

Research participant 1, of Indian decent was six years younger than research participant 2 of white ethnicity. Both women, were married, stay at home moms whom both have 2 children each. Both participants interviewed, spent on average 7-9 hours with their children respectively. Both participants’ children were of more or less the same age, namely 3 years 4 months and 3 years 6 months, additionally both are second children, however research participant 1’s child was a girl, whereas participant 2’s child was a boy. Research participant 1 tended to have an Authoritative parenting style, and research participant 2 tended to have a Permissive parenting style.

Participant 1’s authoritative style set reasonable limits for their children but was not over controlling. The parent is the authority figure, firm but understanding, willing to give advice, but also willing to listen to children’s concerns. Decissions are explained, and reasons are given rather than just “laying down the Law”. Children from authoritative homes demonstrate higher levels of social responsibility in the form of positive peer interactions, a higher achievement orientation, and cooperativeness with adults and independence in terms on nonconformity and purposefulness (Baumrind, 1973). Children reared in this way tend to be independents and assertive but also respectful of the needs of others. These children have high self-esteem and tend to be self-reliant, competent in tasks they undertake, and popular with their peers, and are more likely to engage in fewer negative behaviors, Roopnarine (1987).

Consequently, research participant 2’s permissive style has an “anything goes” attitude toward raising their children. They may respond affectionately to children but are extremely lax in setting limits and imposing discipline. They are generally undemanding, yet responsive.
