Wal-Mart Immigration Issues University of Phoenix Wal-Mart Immigration Issues Two hundred and fifty employees were arrested on immigration charges from the illegal hiring’s and faced deportation according to Garrison Courtney, a spokesperson for the bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. These former employees of the contracting company were deported back to their respective countries soon after this was reported. A search warrant was executed at Wal-Mart headquarters but management was not cooperative and investigators did not find any further information for the case. Wal-Mart management was said to have known about the illegal hiring practice but did nothing to notify the proper authorities, thus letting the company save money on the cleaning service. The investigation concluded that while Wal-Mart was not criminally responsible that their management was still aware of the issue and were ordered to pay an $11 million dollar settlement. This was the largest settlement of its kind in U.S. Immigration Service history but was not as large as some thought necessary to stop them permanently. Management was also ordered to start an internal program to insure proper hiring practices for anyone working for Wal-Mart or anything they contract out. Wal-Mart received a lot of bad publicity and outcry from the public regarding their overall hiring program, with the lack of benefits, to working off the clock, and low wages, it is hard to believe that people will still work there. Even with all the bad issues regarding this issue Wal-Mart stock closed that day up almost 1 dollar a share. References No Identified Author (2003). Wal-Mart pays for Hiring Illegal Aliens.
