MNGT 201 TEAM PROJECT

HUMAN MOTIVATION

Our business is Pen Sylvania. Pen Sylvania provides budget, gift and ergonomic pens for customers within the state of Pennsylvania. We have gone from having a local store in Harrisburg to catching the eye of a regional manager for Office Max. When one business giant takes notice, others follow suit. We have just started expanding because we sell to Office Max, Kinkos, Hallmark and Staples. We also decided to expand by opening up stores in Pennsylvania’s other major cities: Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. This puts Pen Sylvania at the youth stage in its business life cycle.

Pen Sylvania has adopted a team structure for our organization. We have three managers: Carlos (finance) James (production) and Tamila (marketing/retail.) The current team handles Harrisburg well so the company’s teams may become geographically orientated. Here is a snapshot of Pen Sylvania’s team structure.

We chose Herzberg’s two factor theory because of the motivation factors part. We are trying to identify what will motivate people to push themselves (stimulate and influence motivation) rather than exist or perform a duty to standard.We feel Maslow’s hierarchy and Herzberg’s two hygiene factors only move people to fulfill a status quo rather than excel.

Motivational factors in finance start with achievement, but I doubt that achievement is a very big influence (it’s just math at the end of the day.) Recognition is a big one though. Catching mistakes saving the company money which in turn affords to pay employees more can be a big motivator. Responsibility is another good one. While achievement is not necessarily too important, what you effect puts you in a position of prestige. Advancement is probably the most important thing, every person in finance should want to be the CFO. If you don’t know why, you just aren’t in finance. The CFO gets to gamble with the company money than gets paid the most whether he wins or loses the bet. The work itself...
