Promoting Energy Efficient Stoves
Since 2003, Relief International (RI)/EnterpriseWorks VITA (EWV) has been
promoting the use of the Gyapa brand energy efficient stove—which uses
less biomass, reduces indoor air pollution, and is more durable and safer
than traditional stoves, lessening the harmful emissions that contribute
to illness and the deaths of millions annually—among charcoal-consuming
households, school kitchens and commercial food vendors in Ghana since
2003.
The program recently received the highest carbon credit rating from the Gold Standard
Registry.
Introduction of this stove has helped over 1.9 million Ghanaians reduce their household
expenditure on cooking fuel, saving Gyapa Fuel Efficient Stove users more than $22
million.
Creating cost-effective solutions to household
needs for clean water

filters in Ghana and Nigeria by demonstrating that the filters are a costeffective solution to the water quality problem faced by many low-income
consumers. With support from the Diageo Foundation and the Arthur
Guinness Fund, Relief International has been able to provide over 105,000
people with clean drinking water.
The CrystalPlur water filter—which eliminates 99.99% of all bacteria, parasites and water
borne diseases—is assisting the local private sector in establishing an independent and
growing supply chain for water filters, which is making a significant contribution to the
reduction of waterborne diseases in both Ghana and Nigeria.
Maximizing the Health Impact
Through this innovative $13M program, Relief International, with partners
USAID and Coca Cola, is improving access to safe and adequate water
supplies in the Greater Accra, Central, Eastern, Western, and Volta
regions.
Utilizing an integrated approach, Relief International is providing basic sanitation
infrastructure to schools, clinics and...
