'Will BRIC nations be able to feed their rapidly growing populations in the years to come? Discuss with regard to a Neo-Liberal perspective.'
The World Food Summit of 1996 defined food security as existing “when all people at all times have access to sufficient, safe, nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life” (WHO, World Food Summit, 1996)With the world population recently surpassing the 7 billion mark and rapidly increasing how will the world and in particular the BRIC nations cope with maintaining a food secure society? The implementation of Neoliberal reforms, on account of interdependence, and market liberalisation, are causing third world nations to become ever more reliant on the International System rather than their natural production causing a rise in food security in most of the developing world.
The 'Green Revolution', AoA, and Uruguay Round alongside several policies carried out by the WTO, IMF, and World Bank, supported by developed nations, have industrialised agriculture in developing nations and made there economy vulnerable to economic activity in the international system. This form of neoliberal globalisation has and will continue to increase the interconnectedness between nation states, however the increase in monocultural, chemical-intensive farming has caused severe environmental and societal degradation, and allowed multinational corporations through TRIPs and other mechanisms to control the food production system in many of these nations.
This essay will critically assess the Neoliberal reforms and their impact on world food security and particularly look at the growing food insecurity in Brazil, Russia, India and China. With a look at the Neoliberal perspective of 'Complex Interdependence' and 'Trade Liberalisation' this essay will analyse why ongoing market liberalisation and monocultural production will continue to cause rising food scarcity and insecurity in most of the BRIC nations.
