Introduction
The nursing profession is the heart of the health care system in any country. Nurses more often than not provide the first line of intervention when medical needs arise. In order for nursing to fulfil its intended purpose in health care provision, it is important that practitioners of this noble profession be able to make efficient decision not to mention the ability to be a library of psychosocial approach to health care. To achieve this, it is important that practising nurses be properly trained and qualified not only on pharmacological issues but also and more importantly on how to relate and attend to patients an aspect that has for a long time been disregarded when considering a nurse for hire has been their past. All along, it has not been a requirement for nurses to provide background information nor potential employers to perform a background check (Dye, 2010). However the prevalence of cases of neglect and unprofessional behaviour by nurses giving care especially to mentally challenged patients has been on the rise. This could be have been facilitated by the way society views the aged especially those with mental illnesses.
Problem:
With developments in medicine and associated care, life expectancy has grown and an increasing number of people are growing to their prime old age. Not withstanding the challenges this poses to the society, the increased number of old people and the need by the young people to earn a living, means that it is no longer possible for children to take care of their aging parents (Birkland, 2001). As a result, the demand for services that are specifically targeted at an increasing aging population are at an all time high. The growing number of baby boomers who are reaching there retirement age means that this need will continue to experience exponential growth before it can start...
