Problem Statement
Morale of the entire team is low. All team members feel their work and efforts are not appreciated. The fact that they are working out of title makes them feel they are being taken advantage of. The lack of knowledge on the part of upper management contributes to this.
Concepts Applied & Reflection
Engage & Motivate
The application of the motivation strategies was most effective. I made myself approachable and was open-minded to ideas and concerns presented by my staff. I also encouraged them to come up with new methods of doing the work.
It was also important to engage each worker to truly understand what they were feeling. I scheduled a meeting with the entire team to get a feel for the severity of the problem. Individual meetings were also scheduled. Engaging with each worker gave me the opportunity to learn specifically what was bothering them. The meetings also served a venue for the worker to vent.
Lastly, it was necessary to also engage upper management. It was important to listen to their needs as well. However, it was more important for them to understand why the staff was not being productive.
Communicate for Results
After considering all the possible barriers to communication I was prepared to sit down with each of my workers. First, I chose a location for the meeting that was free from noise and other distractions. The HEAR listening technique was very effective for understanding the feelings of each worker.
It was imperative to also use the same techniques when communicating with upper management. In essence my job was to translate very technical language to language that someone without an IT background could understand.
