Political behavior in organizations can be defined as activities that are not part of one’s formal roles in the organization, but that influence, or attempt to influence, the distribution of advantages and disadvantages within the organization.

Understanding the political dynamics of your organization will only help on one project work and credibility and career prospects.

Why do Office Politics Surface ?

People instinctively develop relationships in a social gathering.

In the work culture people have various levels of insecurities, personalities, ambitions and human nature which often lead to political behavior.

Political behavior in an office can also occur because people tend to satisfy their needs of achievement, power, affiliation, autonomy, self esteem, safety, security, equity and self actualization.

Political behavior can also rise for conflicting and confusion and when a business situation goes out of synch from the formal structure.

Experts believe political behavior is a part of the natural hierarchy due to the differing authority and influence of the personalities in an organization.

Everybody in an organization is immersed in the office politics to some degree.

People can be defined by the conduct, their role, position, face, figure, cultural heritage.

The benefits can of getting involved in office politics could be advantageous to advancements in career prospects could equally mean belonging to the wrong faction and getting associated with the wrong people.

Being an observer and working hard being honest, being courteous and speaking your mind with some concern about how it will come across are all good way to avoid politics all together.

Sometimes being involved in a clique or a faction could affect ones customer service ability and could cause distractions.
