Devil Wears Prada: You Think This Has Nothing to do With You

In the movie The Devil Wears Prada, Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) is a bright young woman who has graduated from college and wants to work as a magazine writer. Andy applies for a job at “Runway,” a much esteemed fashion journal due to the fact that it is the only magazine with a job opening. She knows that if she can perform well in her job as an assistant to Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), she can get into any other magazine in New York based on Miranda’s powerful recommendation.

Although the whole movie focuses on changing the nature of a young girl from the Midwest to fit the culture of the fashion world of New York City, a specific scene is truly powerful and displays that regardless of the fact that Miranda is tyrannical in her character, she is also a very influential leader. In the scene “You Think This Has Nothing to do With You” Miranda is surrounded by a few people who work for her and she is wondering why it is so hard for them to put together a decent run-through. As Miranda assists them in putting an outfit together, one of the employees takes out two belts to add to the garment saying, “It’s a tough call, they are so different.” At this point in time, Andy laughs at her remark because to a person with no experience in fashion the two belts look almost identical. Miranda stops what she is doing for a moment and asks Andy what she finds to be funny about the situation. Andy hesitantly replies that the situation isn’t funny, “It’s just both of those belts look exactly the same to me, you know I’m still learning about this stuff.” Miranda is flabbergasted to hear Andy describe the fashion world as “stuff” and gives her a lecture about how this “stuff” is really important and how much hard work and history is in a piece that Andy just throws on her back.
