It’s Time For an Audible: College Football’s Change From BCS to a Playoff System

The year was 2004, there were 5 teams still undefeated, the weather was changing, and Christmas was on the horizon. The college football regular season had just came to an end. The undefeated USC Trojans will play and pound the previously unbeaten Oklahoma Sooners in just a couple of weeks. This just coming a few days after the undefeated Auburn Tigers will hand the #8 Virginia Tech Hokies their third and final loss of the season. USC ended the season as the National Champions, while Auburn and fellow undefeated team, Utah, could only wish there was a college playoff system that would give worthy teams a chance at the National Championship. Now, come back to the present time. It is time of change. It is the perfect time. This could be the year that the NCAA could make a good change, a necessary change for college football. The NCAA should change the Division 1 College Football to the playoff system that coaches and fans alike have been begging for the past decade.

The fate of teams would not be determined by computers but by actual competition. Some may say the BCS is the best College Football could realistically do with the amount of teams, but College Football should not strive for mediocrity but for excellence. This will lead to the better team winning the national championship the majority of the time. Six out of the 11 national championship games during the BCS the #2 seeded team beat the #1 seeded (“Bowl Games”). If the combination of polls and computer selection methods are not accurate enough to decide between the supposed top two teams, it is evident it is not a sufficient system to accurately decide who the best team in the nation is. A 16 team playoff would give all 11 conference champions an automatic bid, leaving the other five spots to be filled out by the next best teams in the nation.
