Alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs are a central part in the everyday lives of many. The use of substance goes back to prehistoric times. Over the centuries, drugs have been used medicinally, religiously, and socially for celebrations, mourning’s, and religious rituals. One can read about them in the newspaper daily, hear about them on the radio and television, and search just about anything, from what they are to how to make them on the internet. Today, more than ever, children are also seen using and abusing tobacco, alcohol, and other legal drugs. They misuse to forget, feel better, or not feel at all, to be friendly, and because of peer pressure. One often uses and abuse with social sanctions and is easily available. If one does not use them, than he or she probably have a user or abuser in his or her family or knows a close friend who uses or who has abused alcohol and or other drugs inappropriately. This paper will discuss and define the biopsychosocial issues associated with substance abuse and chemical dependency in adolescence and adulthood. This paper will also address whether addiction progress more rapidly in young people than adults.

The simplest definition of substance abuse is that a substance control over one’s life. According to the American Medical Association, it is the compulsive use of substance’s resulting in physical, psychological, or social harm and continued use despite that harm. The substance many become more important than one’s relationships, school, work and all else. Substance abuse is widely considered a medical illness. It is not due to being bad, lazy, or just wanting to have a good time. In fact, no one fully understands why some people become addicted and others do not. Addiction is a complex biopsychosocial disease that is often used to describe as a brain-rewarding chemical that produce pleasure, compulsive behaviors, and other group of problems.
