Single Mothers vs. Married Mothers

Thesis: While the increased risks faced by children raised without both parents are certainly reason for concern, the majority of children in single parent families grow up without serious problems.

Over the past decades, the patterns of family structure have changed dramatically. An increase in children born outside of marriage has contributed to an increase in children growing up in a single parent family. While the increased risks faced by children raised without both parents are certainly reason for concern, the majority of children in single parent families grow up without serious problems. Single parent families are much more common today, than they were forty years ago. Family situations change, which makes understanding the effects on children more complicated.

Speaking for experience, I grew up in a married family as well as a divorced, single family. I have also been a single mother since I was sixteen, and have been married as well. It is not fair to say that one is better than the other. It depends solely on the situation. I know that my children have been better off with me being a single mother, than all the abuse that they have seen me go thru. No child deserves to witness either one of their parents abused just so they can be a family. It is harder on a child to have a two parent household were all the parents do is fight, then to grow up in a single parent household. I would rather be a single mother and my children be happy than for me to have to worry about another adult and be miserable. If I am not happy, than my children will not be happy.

There has been some research that states, “77 percent of single mothers say it is harder than being a married mother. Some reasons are because there is less money and no one to hand the baby off to once in awhile. On the other hand two-thirds said that it is easier not to have a husband.
