Personal Communication Assessment

My communication skills are a project I have been working on for the past year. I understand the importance of communication in the workplace. I have recognized how having great communication skills can have significant impact on job performance, promotions, and building great personal and business relationships. With the help of mindtools.com I have identified some weaknesses that I need to improve. I scored 51 out of 75 which resulted in being described as a capable communicator but has some issues. Some problems that were identified were not wasting time with unnecessary information, anticipate problems before they happen, and my overall ability in communicating effectively. I must admit I am guilty of that especially in the work place I working on keeping my responses simple and to the point. I have a great desire to help people as much as possible but I only began to confuse them by overwhelming them with unnecessary information.

Another key area that was analyzed with this tool was being an active listener. Actively listening is vital to communicating effectively, I once thought I was an active listener until I had to repeat what was said. I have since tried to make mental notes of the main points in a conversation. It is important that I eliminate distractions, allow a person to speak and not think about what I am going to say and think about what the person is saying. The results also acknowledged that I need to be an empathetic listener by understanding emotions and underlying thoughts. Often I find in my personal relationship I totally miss the mark when it come down to dealing with others’ emotions and feelings.
