Article 29 : “As Diversity Grows , So Must We” by Gary R. Howard

In the article, “ As Diversity Grows, So Must We,” author Gary R. Howard states that if the United States continues to grow more diverse, everyone, including teachers and educators, must learn to deal with people from cultures other than their own. Race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, national origin, and language are very important parts of our lives. We live in a country that is like a magnet, attracting people from all over the world. Our educators need to recognize that students of many different ethnicities fill our schools.

In the article, Howard discusses the increase in diversity in schools. He explains how some teachers, administrators, and parents believe that the increasing diversity is a problem. However, I do not think diversity is problematic, since having the opportunity to interact with people from many different countries and backgrounds gives students an opportunity to learn about other cultures and become more tolerant.

The issue here is that administrators, as well as educators and parents, need to employ different methods of instruction, since students from other nationalities may have difficulty learning using traditional methods because of their backgrounds. Howard explains in his article that in order for schools to teach effectively, they must implement a plan, such as the “ five phases of professional development” (Education p136).

The five phases of professional development are a group of activities, and workshops that help teachers as well as administrators to get more educated or in other words to gain more knowledge in order for them to be able to know what to teach and how to teach

students from different backgrounds.
