“A Temporary Matter” by Jhumpa Lahiri, is a about a husband and wife named, Shoba and Shukmar who six months before hand lost their first child. The grief is overwhelming to shoba especially because she gave birth to a baby that died before she could even hold it. The husband took it the hardest, he has completely took himself away from the world and the house has become a hideaway. The wife Shoba approaches the issue opposite instead of staying in and cleaning/cooking in the house she is constantly going out and enjoying herself. When she is home she can remember everything about the baby and it brings all the feelings of the loss. They both change their life styles so dramatically they do not do the same things they use to because they do not want to remember the event that they went through. This is not strange for people to do after an event like this. This story was extremely heartfelt, and you have the feeling of empathy towards the couple. To me this story is 100% true, personally my uncle and aunt went through this and they both went through exactly what this couple is doing. Shoba use to stock up on supplies for the house and then she stopped when she lost her baby because she wanted to do nothing about the house it reminded her of the amount of joy that came from preparing for the baby. She could remember every detail of what she did to prepare. They both wanted to get away from the hurt so they decided that they needed a new start they both did research for a new apartment, “The apartment was on Beacon Hill, so she could walk to work,”(Lahiri 1135). This was a new begging they new they would never be the same again but they new they had to move on and keep their little boy in the back of their minds. I wonder if they would ever fully go back to the way they use to be? Will they ever have kids again?
