Course Description:

As you well know, financial accounting is critical to the process of reporting the overall financial performance of public companies.  Fundamentally, financial accounting exists within a context of compliance with GAAP.  On the other hand, this class is about management accounting, and management accounting is limited only by the ingenuity of managers’ and accountants’ efforts to organize and use information in order to create a competitive advantage.  Good managers who compete well in the business world know how to use management accounting to plan, control, and evaluate business processes with the end result being an effective organization and (hopefully) strong financial accounting results.

This course will cover various management accounting topics related to providing relevant information to decision-makers within the firm. This course will provide you with tools that are valuable in a variety of professions, as well as prepare you for the CPA exam.

Course Objectives:

This course focuses on the use of accounting information for management decision-making. This course covers cost behavior, cost measurement, cost accumulation, and cost allocation. Within the context of these objectives, we will use statistical analysis to determine cost behavior, use normal and standard costing to measure costs, use job order and process costing to accumulate costs, and use traditional and activity based costing to allocate costs.
