Penguins belong to a group of water, flightless birds living almost totally in the southern hemisphere.

Two feature that gives proof that penguins belong to the bird family, 1. They have feathers and 2. They have beaks and lay eggs.

How does the penguin move?

They usually move in huge groups and are most at ease when moving in the water, either by swimming or diving. However, sometimes they need to travel by land to find a nesting area or to get away from a predator. The normal speed of penguins walking on land varies by species, but it can range from 1 mph to 2.5 mph.

A penguin's walk is more like a waddle; its feet shuffle forward nervously likes an unsteady person. But this back-and-forth motion is really a good use of energy for the penguin. When it gets tiered of walking it may lie down and scoot across the Antarctic ice on its belly. On very jagged cliffs, penguins can use their beaks like a rock climber's ice pick, to gain more steady balance.
