Children Exposure to Television Violence

In today’s society children start watching TV at an early age, and gain many positive and negative influences. However children that are exposed to violence on Television face many risks which contribute to aggressive behavior, risky behavior and imitation of violence. Children are not able to differentiate between fact and fiction at an early age, certain behaviors are glorified to being good on TV so children get the misconception that as long as you’re doing it for the good its okay to fight, or indulge in negative behaviors because this is what it takes to be the “Good Guy”. Adolescence is the most crucial, vulnerable period in the growth of a young boy or girl. They are more susceptible to things they learn at early age.

When Children are exposed to violence on Television they often learn aggressive behavior where they begin hitting other children at school, biting and kicking. But when this is done they don’t think of it as being bad because they have been shown on TV this is what you do to the bad guy. You can punish a child for such behaviors but it does nothing if the child is still allowed to watch such programming. You must actually show a child why it is wrong and explain to them the consequences of doing such things, so they have a clear understanding that what is done on Television is not to acted out on friends or family. If you continue to let your child to be exposed by what is seen on Television then in their minds they develop this as an okay behavior.

When Children can’t distinguish fact from fiction they get misconceptions from Television programming, which include things such as drinking and smoking or using profanity which are risky behaviors for children to pick up and learn. On television these behaviors are shown as cool and doing these things makes you the cool person in charge and you are able to do what you want.
