SPLINTERS ESSAY

The motto (you reap what you saw) is a strong message to the collection of short story’s Splinters (bains98). This saying translates as getting what you deserve. Three story’s within the collection that demonstrate the saying are (shatterproof jack Ritchie)(lady in the dark )(Dougie ).

In the first story of the collection Shatterproof, the character of Mrs. Williams clearly ‘reaps what he saws’ when she hires Mr. Smith too kill her husband Mr. Williams. “I have money and apparently she wants it”. Demonstrates clearly Mrs. Williams is greedy and unloving. She gets what she deserves when Mr. Williams tricks Mr. Smith in to killing her wife. Her actions and unfortunate consequences highlight the fact that crime in the story certainly doesn’t pay.

The other character in this story ‘shatterproof ‘to demonstrate ‘you reap what you saw’ is Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith’s actions cam back to haunt him after he is outsmarted by Mr. Williams. After he brakes in to Mr. Williams house and gets a taste of what it is like to be a victim by expecting to kill Mr. Williams but suddenly the story twists. “I could be accused for your death. I could go to the electric chair”.

The story Dougie represents a strong demonstrating of “you reap what you saw”. Dougies father is the one that suffers in the end because of his actions towards Dougie. Dougie is a child that is unable to look after himself because of his disability and his dad very rarely gives him any love or attention. In the end Dougies monster friend asks “would you like to play, or shall I kill your father first” showing that…

The three characters have similar charistics towards their respect for others and their greediness’. As the story’s show the actions and behavior come back to them one way or another. If they weren’t so greedy and selfish they will still ‘reap what they saw’ but in the completely opposite way they previously did....
