Greenpeace is saving more than the whales these days

When we think of Greenpeace, the first phrase that comes to mind is ‘save the whales’ but in fact, their concerns go far beyond that. As well as working to keep our oceans alive, they are also protecting the forests, campaigning for sustainable agriculture, finding solutions for toxic waste, working towards alternatives to nuclear energy and fighting against global warming.

Global warming is not just something that is going to happen, it is happening now. This is an issue that will affect everyone no matter where they live, whether rich or poor, young and old, black or white, religious or atheist. We have the knowledge and technology to stop this from going any further yet those who can put the solutions into action will not do so which places their morality in question. It does not matter whether it is because of politics, money, or a combination of the two, what matters is when all is said and done, all the money and all the power will not mean a thing if the planet is dead.

With global warming comes melting glaciers and with that comes rising oceans. Living here in Coastal Georgia, primarily my neighborhood which sits on built up marshland just above sea level; we are particularly concerned with the issue. According to risingsea.net, the ocean along our coast rises approximately one inch every ten years and it gets a little more than that every year. The former planning director of Camden County, Georgia, Tish Watson drew up plans for future development to help protect those areas that are in danger but there is no indication of when or if these plans are to acted upon. Some of the areas slated to be built up are already in trouble. There are streets, including my community’s only evacuation route which is Harriett’s Bluff Rd, that are under water every time we get rain while it is high tide.
