This story follows the tales and adventures of one, Odysseus, who is the King of Ithaca. The Story tells of his adventures in which he tries and succeeds in getting back to his wife, son, and kingdom in the land of Ithaca. The Odyssey opens up during the tenth year after the fall of Troy and Odysseus has yet to return home. Instead he has been imprisoned by the Nymph Calypso andis trapped on the western island of Ogygia. After a while the gods convene and they send Hermes to release Odysseus from the grasp of the island of Ogygia, and from Calypso herself. At the same time they also sent Athena to help and aid his son, Telemachus in everything he needs to do as well. The son calls for an assembly announcing that the suitors who have eaten his food, and pillaged his land for several years are in the wrong. With that said and done, he goes and visits Nestor at Pylos, as well as Manaleus in Sparta for information on his father’s current whereabouts. The only thing that he could gather from them was the fact that the Spartan King knew his last location was on the Island of Ogygia with Calypso. Now, Odysseus has built the raft he needs to be set free from Ogygia. Once he sets sail however things get bad. After being at sea for I believe seventeen days, Poseidon destroys and sinks the Ithacan king’s raft and a nymph saves him and sets him upon the shores of the Phaecian people. He is greeted by the princess of the land and her maidens awaken the sleeping, exhausted Odysseus while playing ball by the river. When awake he asks for her pity, and she sends him to the palace of her father, Alcinous. When there the blind Demodocus, sings a wonderful song about the battle of Troy which brought out a tear from the eye of the warrior Odysseus. This song had brought out the stories from within him, and he told the Phaecian people of his travels.
