Business Research Methods V

Team C, working as a Cincinnati, Ohio chapter of Business Professionals of America has decided to serve food at a local homeless shelter for their community service project. The team is determined to earn the President's Volunteer Service Award, in addition to helping their community. However, they have been researching the poverty and homelessness level in their community and have found it to be among some of the highest in the country. They found that “nine states exhibited statistically significant higher household food insecurity rates than the U.S. national average between 2008-2010 with Ohio at 16.4% being sixth on the list” (Hunger in America. 2012, Para. 3). “In 2009, 43.6 million people (14.3 percent) were in poverty” (Hunger in America. 2012, Para. 3).

“With the new budget in April 2011, Congress cut 40% ($80 million) of funds from the Emergency Food and Shelter Program, which serves homeless programs and food programs around the country” (National Coalition for the Homeless, 2011).Team C has decided to expand their service project into larger scale fundraising in order to bring in needed funds to help cover the ongoing costs of the food for the “14 local shelters and 17 Soup Kitchens that their local free store food bank provides to the surrounding 20 counties”, (Feeding America, 2012). This raises additional need for research from the organization to determine what they can do as a group to raise funds and if they can adequately meet this new demand.

Milestones

To create a schedule to determine the steps needed to develop the survey and obtained the survey responses, the team identified the major milestones to accomplish the objective. The major milestones are: approve the survey, collect the data, and present the results as shown in Figure 1.
