CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the study

A film, also called a movie or motion picture, is a series of still or moving images. It is produced by recording photographic images with cameras, or by creating images using animation techniques or visual effects. The process of filmmaking has developed into an art form and industry.

Movies are cultural artifacts created by specific cultures, which reflect those cultures, and, in turn, affect them. Film is considered to be an important art form, a source of popular entertainment and a powerful method for educating – or indoctrinating – citizens. The visual elements of cinema give motion pictures a universal power of communication. Some movies have become popular worldwide attractions by using dubbing or subtitles that translate the dialogue into the language of the viewer.

In the United States today, much of the film industry is centered around Hollywood. Other regional centers exist in many parts of the world, such as Mumbai-centered Bollywood, the Indian film industry's Hindi cinema which produces the largest number of films in the world and Kathmandu-centered Kollywood, the Nepali film industry.

Nepal is becoming increasingly aware of its status as the most multi-cultural society in the world.  More and more foreign and domestically made movies are playing in more and more multi-theater complexes across the country.  As studios struggle to cater to growing ethnic appetites with movies which have cross-over appeal to other ethnic groups, research is needed on film tastes and preferences of our diverse population.  Yet, research on movie going habits and preferences has too often confined itself to college-aged filmgoers.
