When Number 5 attacks
Where the Heart is is a good choice if people are looking for a comedy and romance movie. The movie is about a pregnant seventeen year old girl, Novalee Nation who is left by her boyfriend. Her life changes after she born her baby, Americus Nation, because she met Sister Husband, Forney and Lexie. Novalee is the main character, and she is cursed by number 5. Whenever she sees number 5, something bad will happen to her. The Number 5 brings bad luck to Novalee even though that number is important in Eastern culture, but she breaks the curse at the end of the movie.
Number 5 is a lucky number in Eastern culture. Many things are associated with number 5. There are five elements which are wood, fire, earth, metal and water; there are five Chinese grains which are soybean, wheat, rice, millet and hemp; there are five Chinese blessings which are wealth, happiness, longevity, lucky and prosperity ("Chinese Meaning of Numbers"). Five is a number of human being. There are five senses which are sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch ("Number 5"). Human has five fingers and five toes. Number 5 is the balance number because it is between 0 and 10. Besides, the sound of number five in Chinese is the same as not. If it is used with the negative words, it will become good.
Novalee Nation is scared of number 5. The first number 5 appeared to her life is when she turned 5. Her mom abandoned her. Later, her mom shows up when Novalee is known as a Walmart mommy. Her mom takes her $500 and never returns. Once again, her mom leaves her because of number 5. Her mother didn’t want a daughter, so she left Novalee at 5 years old. She comes to see her daughter to take Novalee’s money. The first number 5 in the movie is the amount of changes. When she goes to Walmart and sees $5.55 for change, she rushes outside immediately because she knows something bad will happen. Her boyfriend, Willy Jack, leaves her.
