Importance of Ethics in police work

The study of police ethics has expanded considerably in the past few years due to the increased cases of police corruption and brutality surfacing in media as well as in courtrooms. Law enforcement police professionals; just like any other professionals should ensure that they follow their professionalism ethics. Police work is a skilled occupational with the prime deliberation constituting providing services to the entire public benefit. Since law enforcement/ police work is a profession, police should therefore exercise ethical conduct. Ethics is therefore an important concept in the line of police work. Ethical standards and ethics involve doing the right thing at the right time in the right way and especially for the right reason (Gleason, 2006). Police therefore follows certain code of ethics established by IACP (International Association of Chiefs of Police ) to govern police conduct.

Ethics concept adds value to police profession as well as to the community in general. This is of importance as it helps police to make ethically and rational sound decisions, take prompt action concerning their choice, identify different choices to address different issues and accept responsibilities for their actions. It helps individual police act fairly consistent to social contract with the implicit agreement between people and the government addressing responsibilities, mutual rights as well as expectations.

Also, ethics are important in police area so as to encourage Integrity to their professionalism asn hence becoming integral to the entire lives in the community. This may be achieved while contorting and controlling in their particular role and maintaining broader self sense and balance their emotional lives.
