Introduction

A sustainable business is an application of at least three sustainable principles dimensions such as economic, environmental and social. It is also known as ‘ongoing profitable business’. (Geoffrey, 2011) The concept of sustainability is highly adopted that most of the major organizations have included the sustainability measures in their Sustainable Report annually. Sanford Limited became one of the founders in New Zealand Business Council for Sustainable Development (NZBCSD) (NZBCSD, 2001)

As one of the long-standing fishing companies in New Zealand, Sanford is well-known for its sustainability in its fishing business. Basically, it harvests, farms, processes, stores and market aquaculture products and quality seafoods on the New Zealand’s clear waters. Sanford’s three main focuses are: environmental, social and economical sustainability. (Sanford, 2007)

Environmental

To achieve environmental sustainability, Sanford believes it is everyone’s responsibility to take care of the environment. Employees were educated to practice environmental care while working and be responsible for their actions. Sanford also implemented a guiding policy. It includes improving environment performance by using marine resources to support sustainability, reducing impact on water and energy supply, reducing the waste emission impact, minimizing the possible impact from using and storing dangerous substances, and to endorse the codes of practice in seafood industry and environmental initiatives.(Sanford, 2007)

With Sanford’s Environment System (EMS) , improvements in eco-efficiency can be achieved by meeting objectives and goals such as monitoring the usage of fuel (diesel), water and electricity. Electricity should be utilized more efficiently where energy can be conserved by switching off the switch when not in use, and reducing the amount of diesel used and improve management in deepwater vessel to reduce energy consumption.
