"Naked" by David Sedaris

Characterization is the means in which you describe a character. In David Sedaris’ novel Naked characterizes himself as the main character in many different ways. As the protagonist in the novel David’s life is described differently as he matures and grows older. We see him grow up into an adult and how the years are able to change someone dramatically.

As a young boy David is innocent like many other children. He is submissive and does everything his parents tell him to do, mainly his father. We see this mainly in the chapter “The Women’s open.” In this chapter of the novel it describes David mainly as a young kid. As the young child, he is innocent and stays out of everyone’s way, mainly because of the fear he withholds. He still remains a close observer to everything that happens in his surroundings. Certain days including when his father, his sister, and him went to the golf course showed how reserved David really was. While they were there his sister wasn’t feeling well, and as a selfish and ignorant parent that his father was he chose to ignore her. The father cares only for himself, and only tends to his children because he has to. David doesn’t fully understand the actions of his father because he is young, and has not yet matured.

In the chapter “True Detective” one is able to observe that David’s mind has grown to think of other things. Rather then thinking of the usual childish things such as sports and toys David has begun to wander his thoughts and think about sexual things. In this chapter David wanders off to his mother’s room without permission in attempt to cover up his previous lies. By doing this he places even more trouble upon himself. While in the closet his mother walks in. luckily she never walks near the closet to find him in there. David can’t help but turn his face away from his mother in her bedroom.
