Introduction

Plagiarism refers to an instance where an individual steals or passes off someone else’s work by using their ideas, language or other original materials without their consent or citations. Although using other people’s work is not harmful, it is crucial to acknowledge the owners of the work, by understanding the causes effects and punishments of plagiarism.

Causes of Plagiarism

Plagiarism is an academic misconduct; a student should never copy someone else’s work or hand in fellow students work claiming that it is their own (Billy, 104). One cause of plagiarism is fear of failure of accounting for one’s own work. Students fear accounting for shoddy work, which in turn, results to poor grades. Another cause of plagiarism is poor time management. Some students may have poor time management skills, and hence they would rather plagiarize than fail to do the work (Gardner, Jewler, and Betsy, 48).

Effects of Plagiarism

Students who copy other people’s work end up not getting an opportunity to sharpen their creativity. This is because the individual is used to copying another person’s inventiveness. This greatly affects the nation’s progress in the long run, if not handled properly. It is necessary for tutors to set standards and disciplinary procedures to curb plagiarism (Gardner, Jewler, and Betsy, 48).

Consequences of Plagiarism

Plagiarism is an illegal act since it violates copyright. The punishments for plagiarism include fines or even imprisonment. Students might even experience difficulty in taking careful and fully documented notes when doing their research. Assumptions by college instructors on the students are that they have already learned the correct academic formulas of research and documentation (Bill 58).
