1.To think people as purely selfish, self-sustaning creatures is inapropriate. People are members of communities and they share mutual interests. Their own interests are defined in terms of these mutual interests and they prosper by relying on the these mutula interests. Individual is socially constitued and socially situated. It is a product of the mobile and entrepreneurial society in which individuals form various groups or organizations and they move and communicate between these groups or organizations. Therefore, whenever when we say “individual”, we must be also refering to the relative context the individual is in. Who we are, our apprearance, even our feeling and thoughts are for the most part defined by the context and by our society in our conmmunication with other people.

In addition, as it is said by Geertz, a human being all alone in nature would not be a noble, autonomous being but a pathetic, quivering creature with no identity and few defenses or means of support. Even for the heros, they stand out, because they serve the interests of others and their communities. We are who we are becauses our communities and we can only find our identitfy within the commuties. For most people, the corporations they work for are their primary community. The coporations will greatly affact the values and conflict of values within which the individuals live much of their lives.

All in all, individual is not a concept of self-sustaining and selfishly pursing one’s own interets. They are part of the large communities and environment they live in. Their identities defined by these comminuties. Further, If they want to prosper and live well, individuals must constantly interact with other peoples and manage the relationships with others in a way that achieve mutual interests.
