Is my job enriched? Well I guess it depends on what point of view you are looking through. My job an accountant might seem dull and mundane but I feel like it is important. I experience meaningfulness through the help I provide my branches and the appreciation I receive. Take for instance this Thursday morning when Debra from called in regards to a journal entry that she did not know the GAAP rules on. I helped navigate her through the rules and ensure that her compliance with GAAP was correct. Debra works in accounting so helping another accountant made me feel important and useful. Brian from sales though, believes that accountants are not as important to the company since they we are not sources of income. I know, since I eat lunch with him and he reminds me that how the CEO values what he does. Although I hate to admit the fact that he’s right, my company is sales focused. I have been told a few times throughout my career that the correct thing to do is not necessary the right thing to do.

Within the two years at work, I have expanded my responsibilities greatly. I am responsible for the initial set up of the project, labor projection and actual cost, and monthly project close. This task identity is just one of the skill varieties I have gained through my career. Experienced meaningfulness and task significance are similar in that both have an impact on others. Similar to the foreman and the worker in reading one that perform the “grunt work”, I feel that I affect the direction of the company. I might not be upper management nor does my cubicle wall hang full of awards, but without my work and input then the company could potential lose money in cost saving areas. One area that I am proud of is receiving the Rising Star award at work. This was given by my Director and VP because the hard work I had put in during SAP implementation.
