UTILITARIANISM

The utilitarianism principle involves four distinct theses:

* Consequentialism- The principle holds that the rightness of action is determined solely by their consequences. It is by virtue of this thesis that utilitarianism is a teleological theory.

* Hedonism- Utility in this statement of the theory is identified with pleasure and the absence of pain. Hedonism is the thesis that pleasure and only pleasure is ultimately good.

* Maximalism- A right action is one that has not merely some good consequences, but also the greatest amount of good consequences possible when the bad consequences are taken into consideration.

* Universalism- The consequences to be considered are those of everyone.

The utilitarian principle does not insist that the interests of everyone be promoted, they oblige us only to include the interest of everyone in our calculations. With this case, all the four forms of utilitarianism are incorporated. As we can see, with universalism where the consequences to be considered are those of everyone, the pollution is a big factor for Rebecca Wright in that pollution affects everyone in some negative way. The ozone-layer is affected or even the water systems may become contaminated and also the health of individual is also of major concern such as liver cancer.

Secondly, with pollution, there is no right about it. In this case, maximalism may be taken into consideration, if location is brought up. For instance, taking all the negative effects of pollution into consideration, we can then look for possibly the most positive consequences from this pollution. Even if Rebecca decides to move the chemical plant she still has to take into consideration those that are in the environs. She can probably think about air filters, having CFCS sprays just to name a few solutions to the pollution.
